Frédérick P. Gosselin is Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Polytechnique Montréal. He obtained his Doctoral degree from École Polytechnique in  Paris, France in 2009 for his work on the mechanisms of fluid structure interactions in fluid flow over vegetation. Before that he obtained both B.Eng and M.Eng. from McGill University in Montréal Canada in 2004 and 2006 respectively.

Prof.Gosselin’s research interests revolve around instability phenomena and fluid-structure interactions. He has studied various engineering problems such as the forming of aircraft wing skins, vibrations in hydroelectric turbines, or the garden hose instability in a geoengineering project, but he also displays a keen interest for the natural world through studies on the bending of trees in the wind and the swaying of soft corals in the sea. Moreover, he recently developed a new bioinspired instability-assisted microfabrication technique to tailor microfiber mechanical properties.

The students working in Prof. Gosselin’s research group make use of various experimental tools such as a closed-loop wind tunnel, 6-axes load cells, universal material testing machines, a laser cutting machine, microfabrication and 3d printing facilities. Various theoretical modelling tools such as custom-coded solvers for beam and shell dynamics have been developed, but commercial finite element and CFD codes are also frequently used.
