Fr\u00e9d\u00e9rick P. Gosselin<\/strong> is a Full Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Polytechnique Montr\u00e9al, where he has been a faculty member since 2012.<\/p>\n

He holds a B.Eng. (2004) and an M.Eng. (2006) in Mechanical Engineering from McGill University, where he conducted his master\u2019s research under the supervision of Michael P. Pa\u00efdoussis. He completed his Ph.D. (2009) at \u00c9cole Polytechnique in France, working under the supervision of Emmanuel de Langre.<\/p>\n

Prof. Gosselin is an expert in slender structure mechanics and fluid-structure interaction. His research spans both natural and engineered systems, focusing on the mechanics of structures such as tree branches, spider silk, cell membranes, aircraft components, and hydraulic turbine runners. Positioned at the interface of physics, biology, and mechanics, his work combines experimental methods with modeling and simulation to uncover the governing principles of complex structural behavior.<\/p>\n

He currently holds an NSERC Discovery Grant titled “Morphing Matter Under Fluid Flow: Programming Fluid-Structure Interaction via Bioinspiration.” His research program balances fundamental inquiry with industrial relevance. He collaborates with companies including Hydro-Qu\u00e9bec\u2019s research institute (IREQ) and Maya HTT to develop digital twin technologies that fuse experimental data with computational models for improved design, analysis, and prediction of mechanical systems.<\/p>\n

Prof. Gosselin has served as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Fluids and Structures since 2022. He was a visiting professor at the University of British Columbia (2018\u20132019) and at the University of Calgary (2025), expanding his academic network and collaborative research efforts across Canada.<\/p>\n

The students in Prof. Gosselin\u2019s research group work with a wide array of experimental tools, including a closed-loop wind tunnel, 6-axis load cells, universal material testing machines, a laser cutting machine, and facilities for microfabrication and 3D printing. On the modeling side, the group develops custom solvers for beam and shell dynamics, makes use of commercial finite element and CFD software, and applies reduced-order modeling techniques such as Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD), Kalman filtering, and physics-informed neural networks (PINNs).<\/p>\n
